The celebration by Republican elites was instant, and so was the backlash on the far right.
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, the youthful daughter of Indian immigrants, had delivered a sunny and inclusive Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union address that stood as an unmistakable counter to her party’s two presidential front-runners.
But Haley’s moment and its aftermath revealed an uncomfortable reality for GOP leaders. Even as they praised their chosen representative for condemning the polarizing politics fueling the rise of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, the currents of the 2016 race still churn against the establishment.
Conservative talk radio and social media lit up with contempt for her critique. “Trump should deport Nikki Haley,” commentator Ann Coulter tweeted. Rush Limbaugh accused Haley of taking part in a GOP conspiracy to “drive conservatives out of the party.”
And Trump, predictably, slammed her as soft on immigration and hypocritical. “Over the years, she’s asked me for a hell of a lot of money in campaign contributions,” he said on Fox News Channel.
Donald Trump hit back at South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley Jan. 13. Haley criticized the presidential hopeful in her State of the Union GOP response. Speaking in Pensacola, Fla., he also questioned whether Ted Cruz is eligible to run for President. (AP)
What initially was hailed as a breakthrough for a party struggling to assume control of its image and message — Mitt Romney, the 2012 nominee, said Haley displayed “courage you can count on” — became a fleeting episode that called fresh attention to the establishment’s limited ability to do so.
RINOTRACKER RESPONSE FROM CHRIS ADAMO:
On the heels of islamist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Barack Obama shamelessly dodged the real issues at hand, in hopes of seizing the moment to stump for gun control. Of course such behavior from Obama came as no surprise, given his consistent efforts to minimize the islamist threat and his obsession with overturning the Second Amendment. The Obama administration regards any occasion to undermine the Second Amendment as a greater priority than shoring up the security of the country. That’s just who the Democrats are.
Against such a backdrop, it was thoroughly appalling to see similarly skewed priorities and treachery from the Republican Establishment in the wake of Obama’s January 12 “State of the Union” circus. Given an opportunity to enlighten a national audience regarding the flaws and fraud of Obama’s grandstanding, the GOP chose instead to use the event as a means of undermining the conservative groundswell which it abhors.
Though Republican South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was chosen to deliver the “rebuttal,” it must be clearly understood that no person in her position acts unilaterally. They are chosen by Republican “Establishment” insiders, who must sign off on their speech before it can be delivered. Thus, Haley’s treachery did not merely reflect her own biases against conservative America (which admittedly are becoming more apparent with each passing day), they underscore the real sentiments of Republican Party elitists as they endeavor to move the party left.
With Obama advocating for gun control, while lauding the importation of supposed “Syrian refugees” and other illegal aliens, a Republican Party that held any concern for the plight of Americans could have loudly decried such seditious efforts that significantly increase risks to Americans, while eroding their ability to protect themselves. However, such was not the goal, nor was it even an incidental concern, of the GOP.
Rather, Haley did the bidding of the RINOs who are alarmed at the prospect that Donald Trump and Ted Cruz might continue to gain traction with the American people. If either is eventually elected to the presidency, they would portend an end to the unfettered money and control currently enjoyed by the “Ruling Class” (which includes both parties) inside the Beltway.
It must be understood that Haley’s purpose wasn’t merely to marginalize Trump and Cruz, but also to advance the political fortunes of GOP “Establishment” candidates such as Jeb Bush and/or Marco Rubio. And despite Haley’s flimsy contention that she doesn’t support Rubio on account of his 2013 “Gang of Eight” effort to pass amnesty, it was clear on Tuesday that Haley likewise stands in complete support of amnesty.
In stark contrast to Barack Obama’s fanciful rosy appraisal of America’s current condition and his equally vacuous prognostication for its future, the people of the Heartland realize that our nation is in dire straits, economically, culturally, and strategically. It therefore was a total betrayal of the people for the Republican Party to sidestep these looming dangers, in hopes of pushing a political agenda that would most certainly worsen the condition of the country while enriching big donors such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Fortunately, the American people have become informed, and are aware of the threats facing them. Consequently, despite the elaborate nature of propaganda from the Republican Party “Establishment,” and the exuberant manner in which its treachery is applauded by such liberal venues as the Washington Post, the ruse it up. Americans are saying “NO!” to the status quo of the Ruling Class. In the end, Haley did more to strengthen the resolve of the American grassroots than to weaken it, despite that being her real intent, and the intent of the party.
